Some weddings are all about extravagant details and over-the-top décor. Others remind you that the most meaningful celebrations don't need much more than the people you love.
Sydney and Shawn's summer wedding at Civic Garden Complex in London, Ontario was exactly that.
After meeting while working together on the Children's Mental Health Unit at London Health Sciences Centre back in the winter of 2021, the two built a relationship rooted in friendship, kindness, and plenty of shared adventures. Five years later, Shawn proposed while they were visiting his family in Korea. During a walk along the coast of Jeju Island on their anniversary, he asked a passerby to take a photo of them overlooking the water. Instead, she unknowingly captured the moment he got down on one knee. According to Sydney, she wasn't particularly enthusiastic about it, but thankfully she did capture a pretty great video.
Before their wedding day, we also spent an evening together capturing their engagement session, and it was the perfect chance to get to know each other before the big day.
Their wedding day carried that same quiet, genuine feeling. Nothing felt rushed or overdone. Every decision reflected what mattered most to them: spending time with family and friends, celebrating the people who had supported them, and creating a day that felt completely like them.
A Calm Morning Surrounded by Family
The day began with both Sydney and Shawn getting ready at home, surrounded by their families and closest friends.
Rather than filling the morning with endless formalities, there was a relaxed excitement in the air. Conversations flowed easily, people wandered between rooms helping wherever they could, and anticipation slowly built as everyone prepared to head to Civic Garden Complex.
One thing I loved throughout the entire day was how intentionally personal everything felt.
Instead of elaborate floral installations or trendy décor, the reception space welcomed guests with meaningful keepsakes collected throughout their lives together. Wooden ducks picked up during travels, family heirlooms, treasured vases, draped fabrics, and even a metal recipe box filled with recipes from their grandmothers all told pieces of their story before anyone had even taken their seats.
It was simple, thoughtful, and incredibly them.
A Father's First Look
Before seeing Shawn, Sydney shared one of the sweetest moments of the day with her dad.
Just outside the conservatory, they met for a quiet first look tucked away from the rest of the guests. As soon as he turned around, the emotions immediately took over.
It wasn't a long moment.
There weren't many words.
Just a proud dad seeing his daughter in her wedding dress for the very first time.
These father-daughter first looks are always some of my favourite parts of a wedding day. They're often short, but they have a way of slowing everything down before the excitement of the ceremony begins.
A Tropical First Look in the Middle of London
One of the things that makes Civic Garden Complex so unique is the conservatory.
Walking inside almost feels like stepping into another country. Tropical plants stretch toward the glass ceiling while lush greenery surrounds a small pond complete with a waterfall and fish. Even on a bright June afternoon, it feels peaceful and tucked away from the outside world.
It was the perfect setting for Sydney and Shawn's first look.
As soon as they saw one another, the nerves melted away. They laughed, hugged, took a quiet moment together, and simply enjoyed finally being able to share the day with each other before everything officially began.
It's easily one of the most unique first-look locations I've photographed in Southwestern Ontario.
A Garden Ceremony Filled With Happy Tears
Their ceremony took place beneath the sweeping branches of the mature trees surrounding the gazebo.
The shade created a beautiful, intimate atmosphere while guests looked on as Sydney and Shawn exchanged heartfelt personal vows.
There wasn't a dry eye in sight.
Both fathers became emotional. Their niece fought back tears. Shawn grew emotional while listening to Sydney speak, and before long, laughter and tears were happening almost simultaneously.
The best personal vows always seem to do exactly that.
They make everyone laugh one minute and reach for tissues the next.
The ceremony itself was short and sweet, but every minute felt genuine.
Choosing People Over Portraits
One thing I loved about Sydney and Shawn's timeline was how intentionally they prioritized spending time with their guests. Planning your timeline thoughtfully can make such a difference in how your day feels. Curious how I help couples plan a relaxed wedding photography timeline? Learn more about my wedding experience.
After the ceremony, we captured a handful of family photos beneath the trees before spending a little time together for portraits around the gardens.
Rather than disappearing for an hour, they intentionally wanted to get back to cocktail hour.
As a photographer, I love this approach.
Your wedding day goes by incredibly quickly, and some of the best memories happen during those in-between moments when you're simply talking with friends, hugging family members, and soaking everything in.
Because they chose to spend that time with their guests, their gallery became filled with genuine laughter, spontaneous hugs, and countless candid moments that truly tell the story of the day.
Saving the Best Light for Last
If there's one part of every wedding day I secretly look forward to, it's those few quiet minutes just before sunset.
At Civic Garden Complex, the magic happens a little differently than many venues.
The mature trees block the sun earlier than you'd expect, meaning the harsh afternoon light slowly gives way to the softest golden glow filtering through the branches.
Earlier in the day, the bridge was sitting in full sun with deep shadows behind it, so we waited.
It was absolutely worth it.
When we stepped back outside later that evening, the light had transformed completely. Warm sunlight wrapped around Sydney and Shawn, outlining them with the dreamiest golden glow while the gardens settled into the calm of the evening.
Those portraits ended up being some of my favourites from the entire wedding day.
Not just because the light was beautiful—but because by that point all the nerves were gone. They had spent the day celebrating with the people they love, and for a few quiet minutes it was just the two of them enjoying being newly married.
Congratulations, Sydney & Shawn
Sydney and Shawn's wedding was a beautiful reminder that meaningful weddings aren't measured by extravagant details or elaborate timelines.
They're measured by emotional first looks.
Personal vows that make everyone laugh and cry.
Family traditions.
Quiet moments together.
And choosing to spend as much of your wedding day as possible with the people who came to celebrate beside you.
Thank you both for trusting me to document such an incredible day. It was an honour to witness every laugh, every tear, and every beautiful moment in between.
