Some sessions feel like they come full circle, and this one with Elwira and Mike is a perfect example. A few years ago, I photographed Elwira’s daughter’s wedding, and since then she’s told me more than once how much she loves looking back at those photos. When it came time to celebrate her own engagement, I was so honoured that she trusted me to capture these moments for her and Mike.
We met at Kerncliff Park in Burlington, Ontario, a great spot for an engagement sessions because it offers so much variety. There’s a little bit of everything; quiet forest trails, open fields with tall grass, rocky cliffs that overlook the valley, and even a boardwalk through a little swampy area. For two people who love nature, the outdoors, and traveling anywhere new, it couldn’t have been a better fit.
At the start, Elwira and Mike admitted they were a little nervous to be in front of the camera. It’s something I hear often, and it’s completely normal. With just a little bit of direction, though, they quickly settled into their own rhythm. Rather than worrying about the camera, they leaned into each other; calm, comfortable, and fully present. It was clear how much peace they find just being together.
As we moved through the park, the session shifted from quiet and reflective to playful and easy. We found ourselves surrounded by tall grass as the sun dropped low behind the treeline. That was the moment everything clicked. They let go of any nerves, laughed together, and just enjoyed the evening for what it was. I hardly had to direct them at all, they were simply soaking each other in while the most gorgeous golden light poured across the field. It felt like a scene made just for them.
Photographing Elwira and Mike was such a privilege, not only because of the connection back to her daughter’s wedding, but because of how intentional they were with each other. Their session was a reminder that engagement photos don’t have to feel stiff or overwhelming, they can be calm, unhurried, and full of quiet joy.
If you’re recently engaged and looking for a beautiful spot for photos, Kerncliff Park in Burlington offers a little bit of everything; forest, cliffs, open skies, and magical sunsets. It’s one of those locations that really lets a couple’s story shine. I’d love to help capture yours.
